What are some frequently asked questions?

Q: The map is so confusing! What do all of these symbols mean?

A: The symbols are actually not as vital as you may think. The main thing you want to look for is the asterisk (*), which represents YOU. Depending on who built the zone you are in, different symbols may represent different things. As a rule of thumb, however, '^' signifies that you can move UP, and 'v' represents that you can go DOWN. Gray pound signs (#) usually represent a gateway, such as a gate, a door, a trapdoor, ect. You can get more information on this by typing EXIT, provided that the gateway is visible. For instance, if there were a gate to the south of where you are, you might see "South - The gate is closed." if you typed 'exit'. You would then use the OPEN command to open it. Some gates are locked, however, so try exploring nearby zones to find the key!

Q: I see a colored aura next to a mob's name! What does this mean?

A: There are three types of auras. First, you will need detect alignment to detect an aura. (Yellow Aura) means that the mob is NEUTRAL. (White Aura) means that the mob is GOOD. (Red Aura) means that the mob is EVIL. Beware that players who have disguised themselves as a mob will not have an Aura next to their name. This is a good way to tell if a mob is real, or just a player in disguise!

Q: Can I die of hunger/thirst?

A: There is no hunger/thirst in the game anymore, so no. It should be noted that "create food" and "create water" are both useless, as well.

Q: How can I earn character points (cps)?

A: Character points can be earned by killing mobs. The amount of XP required to earn a CP increases as you level, and when you finally hit Level 33, the amount required stays at 2million xp. For more information, type 'level' ingame, where 'CPxp=' equals the amount of XP required to earn a cp at said level.

Q: Help! I'm naked! Where can I find eq?

A: If you have joined the Newbie Academy (Look at the 'Getting Started' guide for more information), then you should be able to type GOHOME within the Necromium city to be automatically transported to the Academy. When you are there, look for the 'message board' (A message board stands in the hall for conveying information and asking questions.) When you have found it, type 'read 9'. You will notice that all of the equipment mentioned can be found on mobs located on the EASTERN HIGHWAY. To get to the EASTERN HIGHWAY, simply go east of Necromium City. It helps to type 'where' to see the zone which you are in. You can decide which equipment would be best for you based on the stats listed under "General Stats". As a rule of thumb, THIEVES and WARRIORS do not need mana, wisdom, or intelligence to level up. Strength, defense, and dexterity helps a lot more than resistance to magic (wisdom). CLERICS and MAGES would do well to focus on mana and hp. You can mess around with different eq to see which helps you the most. Use your judgment; obviously you do not need defense if someone is tanking (taking damage) for you.

Q: There are so many skills/spells! Which should I train??

A: It's completely up to you! You may want to consider which skills or spells you probably won't use much, such as FORAGE (since there is no food) or CREATE FOOD (since there's no food). To see which spells/skills your current class can learn and when, type SLIST. You can also type SLIST <class> if you are curious about other classes, for example SLIST MAGE. If you can't decide whether you should train something or not, you can ask on GOSSIP; a lot of players know what's good what isn't.

Q: Is multiplaying allowed?

A: No, not under any circumstances. You should probably read HELP RULES ingame, because ignorance of the rules does not excuse one from them.

Q: What does '..It glows yellow!' mean?

A: On Necromium, EQ may have certain properties, which are shown through auras to the onlookers. Below is a list of most properties and what they mean.

..It glows blue! - This means that the item in question is blessed. Weapons that are blessed have a chance of doing more damage to evil mobs and players.

..It glows yellow! - This means that the item in question is magical. Weapons that are magical may not be enchanted.

..It has a soft glowing aura! - This means that the item in question 'glows'. If you are wearing an item that glows, you will not need infravision to see in the dark. Beware though, some glowing items may make mobs attack you ('aggro' you)!

..It emits a faint humming sound! - This means that the item in question 'hums'. If an item 'hums', then you can use it even if you are blind.

..is red hot! - This means that the item in question will deal damage due to heat (ddth) if you are not affected by PROTECTION FROM FIRE, or are not wearing an item that gives you resistance to heat.

..has a thick coat of ice! - This means that the item in question will deal damage due to cold (ddtc) if you are not affected by PROTECTION FROM COLD, or are not wearing an item that gives you resistance to cold.

Q: How on earth do I know what these items do?!

A: You can train 'appraise' at a trainer of your guild. For more information, see http://www.necrowiki.com/Train. To identify an item that is in a shop or storage, type 'id <item>'.

Q: Help! Why can't I backstab with my weapon??

A: You need to be wielding an item that can be used to backstab (often referred to as 'bsable' by players). Items that can be used to backstab will say 'This weapon can be used to backstab.' when you appraise it. People who actively use backstab often carry around a weapon to use when meleeing (often referred to as a 'meleer' by players).

Q: What does "You sense the presence of a hidden life." mean?

A: This means that a player OR mob that is hiding is in the room. The only players who can execute commands and remain hidden are those who have ENHANCED HIDE trained. The best way to see who or what the hidden life is, is by casting 'mass fly' or 'mass invisibility'. Another way is to just cast a roomspell or to use a skill that attacks everything in the room, such as charge. Beware that these tactics will not reveal players.

Q: Where should I level up? There are so many zones!

A: Each player has his or her own preference of zones, but I generally like the following zones:

Levels 1-10: Mobs in the City of Necromium (excluding cityguards), the animals in the forest just north and south of the City of Necromium, and the mobs, such as sheep and issles, that are WEST of the City of Necromium.

Levels 11-15: The Eranad Farm Estate is fantastic. Beware, however, that pikemen and watchmen will aggro (attack) you! Another great zone is the Elven Treehouse.

For the rest, I'll let you figure that out ;)

Q: Do I have to speak English on the MUD?

A: On public channels, yes. On channels such as groupsay, say, chat, clan, ect; no. However, Necromium only supports the 27 letters in the English alphabet; diacritics such as graves, acutes, umlauts, rings, cedillas, tildes, ECT are not supported. Also, use common courtesy; if you know that someone doesn't speak the language you are, then use English.

Q: What does "Someone" mean?

A: If a person is invisible, then he or she will show up as Someone on all who lists, even if one has detect invisibility. Also, his or her stats (cps, clan, ect) will not show up.

Q: Why is there an asterisk(*) beside a mob's name?

A: A mob with an asterisk(*) beside its name is invisible.

Q: Does Necromium have an ingame message board?

A: No. Each noble house has their own message board, but there is not one global board that everyone can use. Instead, Necromium hosts its own forums online, which can be located at [1].

Q: Is there an age limit on Necromium?

A: No, there have been players as young as 11 that have played. However, just because someone is younger than the general population does not exclude him or her from the rules. Constant immaturity will earn a person a bad reputation, and perhaps even isolation; use your common sense.

Q: What's a "path"?

A: A 'path' is a word used to describe the classes that a player went through before reaching avatarhood, or will go through before they reach avatarhood. For instance, if a person started out as a mage, multiclassed to a bard, then shaman, and then paladin, their path would be "Bard, Shaman, Paladin", commonly referred to as "bard/sham/pal" for short ingame. For more information on "paths", look at the article "multiclassing".
